Why Glencoe Should Be on Your Radar

Why Glencoe Should Be on Your Radar

Glencoe is a village of approximately 8,826 residents located on the North Shore of Chicago, IL just 25 miles from the heart of Chi-town. The village covers an area of just under four square miles and is surrounded on three sides by upscale suburban communities — and on the north and west by the Cook County Forest Preserve forest area that occupies about 1,200 acres. The preserve and local golf courses (two private and one public) delineate the village from adjoining suburbs and give the village secluded exclusivity for the discerning buyer of Glencoe real estate.

Despite its size, Glencoe offers a large array of activities to delight young and old alike. Glencoe Beach offers residents swimming, boating, and walking opportunities, and its green spaces, farmers' markets, and parades offer residents a return to more innocent days of years past.

What will you find in Glencoe?

Gardens galore, including the Chicago Botanic Garden

Glencoe is home to the Glencoe Community Garden, a sustainable, organic food-producing, 5,000-square-foot space that produces 3,000 pounds of food per season to donate to food insecurity prevention organizations. It’s a quick drive to Glencoe where the Chicago Botanic Garden delights nature lovers with its 27 gardens on 385 acres of lush fields.

Skokie Lagoons

Outdoor activities abound at Skokie Lagoons, a 342-acre green space, and marshland where owners of Glencoe real estate can opt for boating, canoeing, and kayaking, fishing, biking, and hiking. For those more inclined to relax, sheltered picnic groves host up to 200 guests.

The North Branch Trail System is open from sunrise to sunset year-round and offers hikers and bikers 20 miles of paved and unpaved trails along the Chicago River. Outdoorsy visitors can hike an introductory level, 4.4-mile hike around Skokie Lagoons; an intermediate, 8-mile trek between Bunker Hill and Linne Woods (which are ideal for bird-watching); or an advanced hike from Bunker Hill to the Chicago Botanic Garden, a 15-plus mile hike among woodlands and prairie vistas.

Lakefronts on the North Shore

Chicago’s North Shore is full of beaches that more than compensate for the absence of an ocean nearby and is popular with owners of Glencoe real estate. Evanston has five public beaches (four of which are accessible to persons with disabilities) with sailing, lessons, and swimming. Glencoe Beach offers sailboats, catamarans, kayaks, and paddleboards, or for those who prefer to relax, umbrella-covered chairs or the Trellis or Sun Shelter for relaxing and picnicking. Winnetka boasts five beaches: three for swimming, one for boating and sailing, and one for canine family members. Visitors can enjoy those activities or opt for a round of volleyball on dedicated courts or watch the kids romp on the playgrounds.

The museum is located on an 8.8-acre site that includes outdoor exhibit space.
